Early Winter Ice and Nature’s Art in Hossa

20/11/2025
The first thin ice has arrived in Hossa, and the smaller ponds have already settled into their winter coats. Öllöri’s ice flowers and soft snow crystals offer a quiet November exhibition, but it’s equally important to remember the flowing waters and the risks they bring. Winter in Hossa is wonderful to explore – as long as you know where you move.

Nature has a way of surprising you just when you think everything is already prepared for winter. On Öllöri, delicate ice flowers and soft snow crystals have risen on top of the first thin ice, creating a quiet outdoor exhibition – a surface that makes you want to stop and simply look. This is November in Hossa: peaceful, unhurried, and filled with small wonders of nature.

Ice Conditions in Hossa

The smaller ponds in Hossa have frozen quickly during the crisp autumn nights. Öllöri also received its first thin ice cover earlier this week. The deeper lakes freeze more slowly. Their spring-fed waters bring fresh, flowing water from below, which delays the formation of solid ice.

It’s also important to remember that Hossa’s waters are more flowing than they may appear. Many lakes and ponds have surprisingly strong currents, meaning weak ice areas remain weak even in midwinter, despite a thick layer of snow. Current spots can be deceptively fragile.

Move Safely – and Enjoy Winter

Hossa’s winter scenery is stunning, and the frozen lakes are wonderful to ski, walk and ice-fish across. At the same time, safety must always come first.

Photo Gallery – November Moments in Hossa

The first two photos are from Öllöri, where the season’s first ice has created beautiful natural artwork on the lake’s surface – ice flowers, gentle reflections and a soft dusting of snow.

The third photo shows Huosivirta, a stream that flows freely throughout almost the entire winter. Its open water attracts white-throated dippers, just like Iikoski – the small river flowing from Hypäs to Huosijärvi, known as one of the best winter spots to observe and photograph these charming birds.

The final photo is taken at Kirkasvetinen. The campfire site has received a soft blanket of snow, and it’s an easy place to visit even in winter. Pistonlehto Road is kept open and runs right beside the pond. Firewood is available on-site, making it a convenient and pleasant stop during a winter outing.
